Step 8

How verbs work

Three groups: る, う, and する・くる. Learn four forms only: dictionary, ます, ない, and て.

る verbs

Drop る, then add the ending. These are the verbs that end in an i or e sound plus る, apart from the five exceptions below. みる works the same way as たべる: みます, みない, みて.

たべる, a る verb

たべるたべますたべないたべて

すし を たべます。

sushi o tabemasu.

I eat sushi.

すし = sushi · を = object · たべます = eat. Polite negative: たべません.

う verbs

The last kana changes. ます uses the i-row. ない uses the a-row. If the verb ends in う, the a-row is わ: かう becomes かわない, not かあない. The て-form follows the last sound.

う-verb endings

くきますかないいて
ぐぎますがないいで
すしますさないして
つちますたないって
ぬにますなないんで
ぶびますばないんで
むみますまないんで
るりますらないって
ういますわないって

ぬ is rare. しぬ, to die, is the one you will meet later. ある does not follow the ない line: the plain negative is ない, not あらない. It is in the 20 verbs.

いく becomes いって

いく is an う-verb: いきます, いかない. The て-form is not いいて. It is いって.

いく · いきます · いかない · いって

する and くる

Two irregular verbs. Do not force them through the る or う rules. A noun plus する, such as べんきょうする, follows する.

Polite negatives: しません, きません.

Five う-verbs that look like る-verbs

はいる, かえる, しる, きる, はしる. They end in an i or e sound plus る, but you do not drop る. They follow the う-verb chart.

はいる 入る · enter

はいります · はいらない · はいって

Looks like a る-verb. It is an う-verb.

かえる 帰る · return home

かえります · かえらない · かえって

帰る is the exception. 変える, to change, is a real る-verb: かえます / かえない / かえて.

しる 知る · know

しります · しらない · しって

Looks like a る-verb. It is an う-verb.

きる 切る · cut

きります · きらない · きって

切る, to cut, is the exception. 着る, to wear, is a real る-verb: きます / きない / きて.

はしる 走る · run

はしります · はしらない · はしって

Looks like a る-verb. It is an う-verb.
