Basic sentences

Ten sentences. One new move each. The vocab is glossed once. After each group, build a sentence of your own.

Vocab, once

  • これ — kore — this
  • わたし — watashi — I
  • すし — sushi — sushi

Name it, then point the particles

01 · です

これ は すし です。

kore wa sushi desu.

This is sushi.

これ = this · は = topic, say wa · すし = sushi · です = is (polite)

02 · が

すし が すき です。

sushi ga suki desu.

I like sushi.

すし = sushi · が = the thing that is liked · すき = like · です = is

03 · を

ほん を よみます。

hon o yomimasu.

I read a book.

ほん = book · を = object, say o · よみます = read

04 · に

がっこう に いきます。

gakkou ni ikimasu.

I go to school.

がっこう = school · に = destination · いきます = go

Build it

Build it. Using only the vocab above, write three sentences: one with です, one with を, and one with に. Keep the verb or です last.

Past, negative, want, question

05 · Past · ました

すし を たべました。

sushi o tabemashita.

I ate sushi.

すし = sushi · を = object · たべました = ate. ます becomes ました.

06 · ません

みず を のみません。

mizu o nomimasen.

I do not drink water.

みず = water · を = object · のみません = do not drink. ます becomes ません.

07 · たい

ほん を よみたい です。

hon o yomitai desu.

I want to read a book.

ほん = book · を = object · よみたい = want to read · です = polite. Drop ます, add たい.

08 · か

これ は みず です か。

kore wa mizu desu ka.

Is this water?

これ = this · は = topic · みず = water · です = is · か = question

Build it. Start from みず を のみます. Write the past, the ません form, and a か question.

09 · で

がっこう で ほん を よみます。

gakkou de hon o yomimasu.

I read a book at school.

がっこう = school · で = place of the action · ほん = book · を = object · よみます = read

10 · でした

これ は すし でした。

kore wa sushi deshita.

This was sushi.

これ = this · は = topic · すし = sushi · でした = was. です becomes でした.
